The Legacy that is...

Lynyrd Skynyrd
growing up this was THE American Rock and Roll band for me. Later in my life I was able to film them live in 1994 in Cuyhoga Falls. Ed King was still on guitar and Leon Wilkeson was still alive and on bass. It was a great honor to meet and work with this legendary band and I will never forget their kind hospitality. We were invited on the bus to discuss the set-list and offered beer/whiskey, but just to be a part of this "family" was fuel enough for us. I will be posting some of the songs from that night at a later date. (gotta dig into the vaults and dust off the masters)

When I grew up Lynyrd Skynyrd music was a staple in my home, my father loved this band and so did I. I was 14 years old the day I heard about the plane crash, I cried like I had lost a brother or sister, I think from that point on the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd, their memory, the heartfelt connection to their loss was deeply en-grained in me forever.

In 1991 before Desert Rock TV was born we were "Vegas Rocks" a local tv series spotlighting local "original" music. Our first premiered guest was Jimmie Van Zant cousin to the Van Zant brothers. I worked with Jimmie for a few years after that taping promos for him etc., and became good friends with him. My father and Jimmie's father even got to know each other before each in his time passed away.

In 1994 Desert Rock TV had the opportunity to film Lynyrd Skynyrd in Cuyhoga Falls Ohio, we were all very excited at the prospect of meeting the Skynyrd family and I want to stress "family".

We were never received better by any other group than Lynyrd Skynyrd. When we arrived at the venue we were met with warmth and were offered to go on the bus have a beer and talk turkey about the show that night. It was magic, we taped three acoustic songs and one electric and were honored with the performance of Down South Jukin in the acoustic set. Ed King was in the band then and Leon and of course Billy Powell.

I cannot say how much I have cherished that time when we met all of the Skynyrd family and how wonderful and giving they all were. Through more hardship than most families ever go through together Lynyrd Skynyrd have survived to continue to share with us this wonderful music.

Billy added so much to the group with his honky tonk piano behind the triple guitar threat! I truly loved working with Lynyrd Skynyrd and all of their crew. God Bless you Billy Powell and the rest of the Lynyrd Skynyrd family.

Billy Powell will be dearly missed. Say hello to my father and the rest of the Lynyrd Skynyrd family in heaven Billy. Keep Em Rockin.
